The Madre Chats with Millie Gooch
We recently spoke with the amazing Millie Gooch founder of Sober Girl Society. We found out more about the society, why she set it up and her favourite Agua de Madre flavour...
How did you start Sober Girl Society?
I started SGS in 2018 by literally creating a page on IG and posting fun quotes and thoughts on sobriety and before long, people started asking for meet-up events!
Why is Sober Girl Society important?
It's a space where anyone who is re-evaluating their relationship with alcohol can come and explore that. You don't need to be abstinent and we don't have requirements - whether you're cutting down, quitting, taking a break or wanting to do something fun without alcohol - it's there.
What should people know about Sober Girl Society?
People that attend our meetings all have different stories. Some have never drunk, some don't drink for health reasons, some had bad relationships with alcohol and some have loved ones they're supporting in not drinking. All are welcome and valid.
What have you learnt about being a female founder and setting up your own business?
It's actually so hard! Especially when you don't really see it as a business. You want to be able to make a difference and you want to be able to offer that for free but you have to pay venues, staff, website subscriptions etc. It's frustrating at times when you know what a difference it could make to people but don't have the funds to implement all the things you want to.
Tell us about what inspires you?
Other women doing amazing things. I am a girls girl through and through and have amazing role models in my life.
Which is your favourite Agua de Madre flavour?
Pomegranate and Hibiscus!
We are excited about Millie's second book set to launch later this year. This is a mindfulness journal called Booze Less: Rethinking Drinking for the Sober & Curious ― A Guided Journal. You can pre order copies now.
